community newsUganda: Stop the "Kill the Gays" law!Monday, 9 May 2011 Over the next three days being gay in Uganda could become punishable by death... A petition has been set up to send a strong message to Ugandan President Museveni that this is wholly unacceptable. The Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill looks like it could be fast-tracked through parliament and mandates the death penalty for anyone convicted of homosexuality, same-sex rape, serial offenders and even anyone with HIV. The author of the bill has suggested that he "may concede" the death penalty if it would help move the bill into law. Parliament appear to be using this bill as a diversion for the growing civil unrest in the country. Ugandan President Musevini had previously said that he wanted the bill dropped but has not indicated whether he will sign or not. Uganda already has laws outlawing homosexuality - imposing prison sentences of up to 14 years. This new law appears to have been inspired by American evangelical Christians.
