Stonewall FC win Gay EuroGames 2008

They shoot, they score

Thursday, 31 July 2008

If any team can stick it between the posts it’s Stonewall FC and so it was on Sunday the 27th July as a convincing 2-0 victory over old enemies Cologne of Germany saw the team win the Gay EuroGames 2008 in Barcelona.

The competition ran from 24th to 27th July and Stonewall FC went through the tournament without defeat, including beating Belgium and Milan (Italy) in the group stages and then beating Washington (hosting World cup next year), a team from Paris in the quarters and another Parisian team in the Semi’s. Stonewall FC won the semi final 4–0 with a convincing victory.

The atmosphere was as hot as the action on the pitch for the final against Cologne as two great goals from Stonewall FC gave the team a worthy 2-0 victory. Stonewall Club Captain Darren Lewis said “The tournament was a great success and another well deserved victory for Stonewall. The standard of football was high and our squad worked hard with a great spirit to bring home gold”.

Stonewall FC, the UK’s longest running and most successful Gay football team, are now holders of an impressive double having also won the Gay Games in Chicago in 2006. Go Stonewall FC.
