Did Jesus tell you to hate me? Did the Lord himself say not to treat me as an equal? Does Mary (holy mother of God – not Quant) whisper that I need to be a second class citizen? Will the Holy Ghost refuse to haunt me because I’m gay and it’s against his beliefs? Does transubstantiation stick in your throat if you’re Trans? Do carols count if I’m queer? Is heaven only for hetros? Does Our Lady Love Lesbos?

Where in any of these so-called Holy Books, those superstitious annuals of hate does it say that we are wrong? There are 364 admonishments against heterosexuals in the bible, only 3 about man on man sex, none about Lesbians, Trans or Bi folk. Which tells us that those religiously inclined hate filled straights need a hell of a lot more supervision than us. We have won the right to equality and to be treated the same way by all and sundry in this country of ours, and it cost us blood, sweat and many tears to get this far, and now the rising shrill voices of the Christian right wing have started to challenge that, to get the law to support their view that they can treat us with distain and disgust because of their superstitions beliefs. An evangelical registrar who won’t marry us in the only place we can get hitched, a relationship councillor who works for ‘Relate’ refuses to work with same sex couples, a ‘christian’ legal firm won’t represent LGBT people simply because of who they fuck or their gender identity, and as for the Mormons! Just witness their irritating interventions in the Californian same sex marriage laws, as if they, the pushers of underage weddings and polygamous eight-wife-weddings can lecture us on the true meaning of marriage!

We’ll hear a lot about Harvey Milk the next few months, with two mainstream films coming out about him, he is our hero, a real fighter for equality. He’s Our Very Own Martyr. St Harvey of Castro St. Every movement needs its hero, and, by his death, Harvey became a symbol, a rallying cry of never, never again. War. Rape. Murder. Poverty. Equal rights for gays. Guess which one the Christian Voice is protesting against? When Harvey died, his holed and Holy Ghost became a part of each of us. Let’s use his voice, my voice, our voice, your voice to loudly proclaim, that we ain’t ever going back into those closets. If we do, then god help us, we’ll get exactly what we deserve.
